Introduction to Smoking Cessation Clinics

NHS Forth Valley provides a wide-range of Stop Smoking services, designed to meet the varied needs of smokers within the Forth Valley area. Evidence shows that supported smokers together with Nicotine Replacement Therapy, Zyban® (Buprobion) or Champix® (Varenicline) are four times more likely to quit. (PDF 6 pages - 73 kb)

Scottish Executive Target

The Scottish Executive targets, based on the Scottish Household Survey, are -

  • to reduce the smoking rate for all adults aged 16+ by 17% from 26.5% in 2004 to 22.2% in 2010 and
  • to reduce the smoking rate for adults aged 16+ in the most deprived areas of Scotland by 10.9% from 37.3% in 2004 to 33.2% in 2010.
 Local Target

In Forth Valley this means -

  • to reduce the smoking rate for all adults aged 16+ by 4.2% from 25% in 2004 to 20.7% in 2010 and
  • to reduce the smoking rate for adults aged 16+ in the most deprived areas by 3.6% from 33.1% in 2002/04 to 29.5% in 2010.
HEAT Targets  8% of NHS Forth Valley smoking population to quit at 4 weeks. This equates to approximately 1,500 smokers per year from 2008-2010.
