The programme developed by Health Promotion aims to:
- Introduce teachers to research evidence about effective sex education, statistics on teenage sexual behaviour and the law and guidance on sex education.
- Consider the sexual health needs of young people and how these might be met through school based sex education.
- Explore participating teachers' own knowledge and attitudes around sexuality, how these may effect the way they work with young people and in doing so experience and evaluate a range of methodologies and materials for sex education.
- Identify difficult situations in the sex education and explore and develop practical strategies for handling them effectively.
Ongoing support and training can be provided by the Health Promotion Department to the school to support any development work arising from the initial training e.g. review of teaching materials, policy development etc.
