Food in Schools

Community Dietitians support the whole school approach to health and are concerned with all food and drink provided in schools. We work closely with:

  • children's services
  • education departments
  • catering services
  • schools (inc. managers, teachers, pupils, school boards)
  • NHS services including health promotion, oral health colleagues and public health nurses for schools.
  • parents
  • pupils

to ensure that food and food provision is part of the health promoting agenda within schools.

We have more recently been working with education and catering services to meet the recommendations set out in the Scottish Executive document: Healthy Eating in Schools - A Guide to Implementing the Nutritional Requirements for Food and Drink in Schools (Scotland) Regulations 2008..

For further information contact Alison Porteous (Community Dietitian).

One More Step. Information and advice on developing a 'whole school' approach to food in schools

This toolkit was developed in collaboration by the Community Dietitians and Health Development Officers of NHS Forth Valley and with partners working in the three local council areas. It is designed for use within a Health Promoting School framework as a resource that will provide brief, easily accessible information, and advice on aspects of a "whole school" approach to Eating for Health. It highlights curricular links, web references and signposts to current national and local documents and will help to support your school in progressing nutritional issues.
