The INTER-ACT Education Worker
The INTER-ACT Education Worker works with teachers and related staff, helping them to use drama techniques to explore personal, social and health education issues from the curriculum. These techniques are fun, game-based and an easy progression from circle time activities.
Staff working with Primary 4 to Secondary 3 undertake training to learn basic drama and role-play skills. On completing the training the class teacher and education worker plan an eight-week programme to suit the needs of the class. The teacher and education worker then deliver it together, sometimes working with visiting professionals like community police officers. After the training day every participant receives two INTER-ACT drama packs, full of games, drama exercises and role-plays to further support them on down the line.
Classes have looked at a wide range of issues from racial equality to smoking to positive behaviour. The topics can be tailored to the classes' needs and abilities. The programme has been successfully used in a special needs school.
The Education worker also works with teachers who have already completed the basic training on developing new lesson plans that can be delivered using drama and role-play.
