The Scottish Executive has set the target that every educational establishment should be a Health Promoting School by the end of 2007. In order to meet this target the three Forth Valley local authorities (Clackmannshire, Falkirk and Stirling) in partnership with NHS Forth Valley, have developed a Forth Valley Accreditation Scheme: 'Positive Approaches to Health in Forth Valley'. It is intended that all educational establishments will have achieved level 1 of accreditation by December 2007.

'Positive Approaches to Health in Forth Valley' is based on the requirements of the National Framework for Accreditation. It is based on self evaluation and quality assured by multi-agency groups. Educational establishments will self evaluate using the tool: 

• How Good is Our School, The Health Promoting School, The Child at the Centre (HMIe 2004). (945 kb - 32 pages)

There are three levels of accreditation, with establishments being required to carry out preparatory work before accreditation. Quality Improvement Officers (QIOs) and Education Officers (EOs) will be responsible for assessing and evaluating establishments for accreditation. This will be done in conjunction with a multi-disciplinary  team involving representatives from the local authorities as well as health. Support is offered by the Education Team and Local Authorities to establishments in developing and sustaining accreditation.
