27 April 2009 - Swine Flu Statement

NHS Forth Valley are taking all appropriate precautionary measures to protect the public following two individuals from the area showing flu symptoms.

Two Forth Valley residents are currently being treated in isolation at Monklands Hospital, following their return from holiday in Mexico earlier this week.

Both individuals are displaying symptoms of flu, but it is not known whether or not they have the latest 'swine flu' version. They did not visit the affected areas in Mexico.

NHS Forth Valley Medical Director Dr Gareth Davies said:

"While we are still waiting for test results, we are treating these cases with the utmost seriousness. The individuals have displayed flu-like symptoms and their current condition is not causing concern.

"As a precaution, we are also contacting those with whom the two individuals have been in close contact, to offer them anti-viral drugs and to take additional swift action if they start to show symptoms."

Notes to editors

Swine flu, which has occurred in Mexico and parts of the US, is a virus that appears to have been transmitting from human to human. The resulting illnesses have been severe in a substantial number of cases in Mexico.

More information on the virus is available from the Health Protection Scotland website.

The Central Scotland Strategic Co-ordinating Group has been activated so that the various partners bodies in the area -local authorities, police, fire, ambulance and other services -can present an effective response to this challenge.
