2 May 2009 - Swine Flu Update

A third case of influenza A (H1N1) has been confirmed in Forth Valley. Graham Pacitti is a member of the contact group of Falkirk couple Ian and Dawn Askham, who tested positive after flying back from Mexico.

Mr Pacitti had originally tested negative but because he continued to feel slightly unwell, a decision was taken to re-test. His symptoms have always been mild and he has never at any stage been coughing and sneezing.

NHS Forth Valley Medical Director Dr Gareth Davies said: "These factors mean the risk of spread to others around him is low. Nevertheless, as a precaution and in line with guidance, we are tracing people with whom he has been in close contact to offer advice and anti-virals, if they become appropriate.

"We are working closely with our partner agencies within the region to provide a coordinated response to the current flu situation. The Central Scotland Strategic Co-ordinating Group is meeting regularly so that the various partner bodies in the area - local authorities, police, fire, ambulance and other services - can present an effective response to this challenge. It is important to stress that the risk to public health is low.

"Everyone can play their part in helping reduce the spread of infection by following good personal hygiene such as washing hands with soap and water and using a tissue to cover their mouth and nose if they sneeze."

Symptoms of swine flu in humans are usually similar to regular human seasonal flu systems. Our advice to the public is to watch out for fever, respiratory systems such as cough or runny nose, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue, vomiting or diarrhoea. If anyone shows these following symptoms they should contact NHS 24 immediately on 08454 24 24 24.
