On the 25th November 2004 in a letter to NHS Forth Valley Chairman, Ian Mullen, the Minister confirmed his support for the NHS Board's Healthcare strategy, including the building of a new acute hospital supported by enhanced community-based health services.
NHS Forth Valley submitted its plans for a new acute hospital at Larbert and supporting services in Stirling after the Boards unanimous decision in July 2003.
Extensive public consultation on the healthcare strategy carried out by the NHS Board at the end of 2002 showed support from across Forth Valley for plans to replace the two infirmaries at Stirling and Falkirk with a single hospital to serve the population of Forth Valley. Expert investigation into three possible sites, identified as part of the consultation, demonstrated that the site at RSNH was the best site for a new acute hospital.
Healthcare Strategy Consultation Response
The NHS Board met in public on 14th September 2004 to consider the response to the public consultation. The meeting, attended by a number of members of the public, staff and stakeholders, considered the responses received during the three-month consultation from the public and key stakeholders to a range of short and longer-term proposals which form part of the agreed healthcare strategy for Forth Valley.
More than 6,000 individual responses were received on the proposals, all of which were shared with NHS Forth Valley Board members.
"I would like to thank the thousands of people who have submitted their views to the NHS Board during the consultation. The decisions taken today are historic and take us a step closer to the model of healthcare outlined in the NHS Forth Valley Healthcare Strategy. The strategy, approved by the Minister in November last year, is an integrated plan for local healthcare with acute hospital services concentrated in a new hospital in Larbert by 2009 supported by a range of enhanced community services and hospitals." said NHS Forth Valley Chairman, Ian Mullen.
"It is essential that the views of the public, staff and stakeholders are properly considered. As with previous consultations, we listened to these views both before and during the consultation process and made sure they were taken into account both in shaping the proposals and in reaching decisions." he added.
