Flying DoctorsThe doctor who was instrumental in setting up the childhood immunisation programme in Forth Valley has retired.

Dr Sarah Mehta devoted l8 years to making the service one of the best in Scotland and NHS Forth Valley is frequently amongst the top health boards in the country for uptake in primary immunisations. In particular she has played a key role in increasing the uptake of the MMR jab at a time when rates have fallen nationally. In addition she has provided support to the Forth Valley Immunisation Working Group for 85 meetings, as its secretary.

Dr Mehta trained in Glasgow and worked at the Hospital For Tropical Diseases when it was based at St Pancras in London. Her career then took her overseas, to Bangladesh, the Philippines, Fiji and Kirbati in the Gilbert Islands. After a brief spell in London she came to Stirling in September l990.

Dr Mehta will not be sitting back in retirement. She is setting out on aseven-week trip around Australia, where she hopes to catch up with friends, and also pick up a piece of Aboriginal art with the cheque presented to her by health service colleagues. She also received a string of pearls on behalf of the Immunisation Working Group.
