NHS Forth Valley will listen and act on the views of their staff about their organisation, Chairman Ian Mullen said today, following the publication of the 2008 NHS Scotland Staff Opinion Survey.

His comments came as the independent study showed most staff who replied would recommend NHS Forth Valley as a good place to work, up 20 per cent from 2006.

Other key findings included:

  • every one of the key 'employee engagement' indicators showed improvements from 2006.
  • overall 28 out 31 response areas showed improvements from 2006, with 1 area unchanged.
  • 81 per cent of staff were clear about what they expect to achieve in their jobs.
  • 85 per cent of staff would go the extra mile at work where required.

In line with the rest of Scotland's health boards, staff want better communications with management, although most said they felt they had the information needed to do their job well.

Mr Mullen said:

"We value the views of our staff and take these findings extremely seriously. They enable us to highlight good performance and take steps to tackle areas needing more attention. That's why I welcome the fact that we had a record response rate to one of these surveys, up eight per cent from the previous survey and higher than the Scottish average.

"In almost every area there have been signs of improvement from 2006.

"It is reassuring that many more staff find this a good place to work, but we are not complacent. As with other Boards, there is clearly more work to be done on improving communications at all levels within the organisation. I want to see us considering this report carefully, and producing a comprehensive response to its findings so that we can build on the good progress here."
