Support for Parkinsons Sufferers

Support for Parkinsons SufferersA new support system has been introduced for people in Forth Valley who have Parkinson's Disease. The Parkinson's Disease Society has appointed Sheila Mutch, a trained psychiatric nurse and former care home manager, as an information and support worker.

Sheila is on hand to offer advice and information to sufferers, their families and carers. The service, which is free, can include home visits, telephone support, and assistance with claiming benefits and accessing local services. Plans are also being developed to tailor a service towards younger people who are often diagnosed whilst are still working and need special advice on their employment rights.

Parkinson's is a neurological condition affecting movements such as walking, talking and writing. No two people will have exactly the same symptoms or experiences with Parkinsons. It is estimated that around 600 people in Forth Valley suffer from the condition.

Sheila Mutch is particularly keen to hear of anyone with Parkinsons who is living alone.

"Parkinson's can be a debilitating and fluctuating condition which can make life very difficult without support. Once diagnosed many people remain anxious and confused about their symptoms. Sometimes a helping hand and a shoulder to lean on can make all the difference."

Sheila can be contacted directly or through a health professional on 0131 333 2770 or 07920 559411. All calls will be returned.

The appointment of Sheila Mutch is seen as complimentary to services currently being provided by the Parkinson's Specialist Nurse in NHS Forth Valley. It comes at a time when a managed care network is being developed for neurological conditions.
