Exterior of th Mental Health Unit at Forth Valley Royal hospital

The Unit has single rooms with ensuite bedrooms and a number of enclosed garden courtyards. Other facilities include dedicated accommodation for patients with special requirements including young people and mothers with babies, a gym, visitor rooms, therapy rooms (physiotherapy and occupational therapy) and quiet sitting rooms.

Emphasis is placed on therapeutic care with a range of interventions based on need, and patients are given protected time to focus on a programme of activities designed to support their continued recovery once they leave hospital.

The Unit, which has 94 beds, is expected to treat around 1,000 inpatients and around 4,000 outpatients a year (including Liaison Psychiatry).

Outpatient mental health services are also provided locally in Falkirk (Falkirk Community Hospital), Stirling (Stirling Community Hospital) and Clackmannanshire (Clackmannanshire Community Healthcare Centre). Liaison Psychiatry (older people) is based at Forth Valley Royal Hospital.

There are five inpatient wards within the new Mental Health Unit.

  • Ward 1 - Intensive Psychiatric Care Unit (adult mental health)
  • Ward 2 - Admissions (adult mental health)
  • Ward 3 - Recovery (adult mental health)
  • Ward 4 - Dementia / Organic Illness (older people)
  • Ward 5 - Functional Mental Illness (older people)

In addition to these services, the Unit is also the base for the Intensive Home Treatment Team and the Adult Mental Health Liaison Service.
